| Learn HTML, you'll understand that there's a font family on your pc, along with some other fonts you might've installed - or something else. Put it this way: HTML searches if the font used for that text is in YOUR FONT FAMILY ON YOUR PC, and if it is not it'll automatically switch to the next font in row (In the HTML code, which can be entered). If none of the given fonts are in your font family, a standard font will be chosen, in this case Times New Roman. He does have it in his font family, the most of us don't. |

| Well, I do hope that you know that a computer has some fonts on it's hard disk. There are (Usually) a few standard fonts that come with Windows, Mac, Linux or w/e OS you're using. Add to that that you can install custom fonts as well.
That's part 1.
The language that's used to build websites with (Usually HTML, but PHP and XML for example are gaining popularity as well) has the option to use a specific font for a specific text. For example, this is Arial and this is Times New Roman. Now your browser (Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc.) will try to select the font from your "fonts" folder (In which all your installed text fonts are placed). If the specific font is found, the text will have that font. If it IS NOT found, the browser will switch to a standard font (I could find it's exact name).
A lot of web codes also have the possibility to select a secondary font, in case the first is not found. |
